Artist Statement
In my work I explore the question “how can I turn a song into a visual story?”. I tend to work in a funnel: I have an intense emotion, a song perfectly captures it, I depict that song through a painting and the emotion is released. Music tells a story, but a story which is different to every person who listens. I wanted to depict how I interpret the stories of my favorite artist through my paintings. The more I continued my investigation the more I allowed collage to come into play. This involved the simple use of paper, to string, cardboard or fabric. By simply adding more than just paint I am able to capture the essence of a song more accurately. By adding different materials it can make a piece more exuberant, uncomfortable, or more emotional in general. I hope my portfolio encourages others to take a deeper look at some of their favorite songs, and while it may not be artistically, discover how it inspires them in their day to day lives.
"Sock Hop" was the piece which sparked the idea for my investigation. “Mascara Run” inspired by “Right Where You Left Me” by Taylor Swift was my first attempt at translating a song to a page for my portfolio. This piece solidified my interest in continuing this investigation. Similarly “heartbroken” which is loosely inspired by “Ex’s & Ohs” by Elle King was my first attempt at using a different medium in addition to my acrylic painting. I realized then collage only strengthens the story in my work and I then continued to use it in many of my pieces.
